"Data is the new oil" — a phrase that's been repeated so often it risks losing meaning. But the analogy remains apt: oil's journey from messy extraction to refined products mirrors how modern data must be piped, refined and transformed to create value streams for an organization.
The process of transforming raw data into business value isn’t clean. Like oil, it begins with extraction — pulling data from CRM systems, APIs, sensors and public datasets.
Just as oil becomes jet fuel, plastic or diesel, data fuels different value streams: analytics, personalization, automation and AI.

Exponential data growth
There are 2.5 quintillion bytes of data created each day at our current pace, but that pace is only accelerating with the growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) (Bernard Marr & Co., 2021).
Organizations are surrounded by a deluge of potential sources:

- Indirect “signal” data like web traffic, sentiment, and even click-paths

The Need for Better Tooling¶
Just as raw oil isn’t useful until refined, raw data is inert without proper pipelines, modeling and governance. This is where teams often feel the strain.
When every new data source means adding another transformation script, connector or integration pattern, the complexity of the "refinery" becomes a hinderance, as every addition requires some form review.
Complexity Creep¶
Each time a new high-fidelity data source or API is integrated:
- New data quality checks
- New transformations
- New deployment workflows
- New monitoring layers
This often leads to tooling bloat — data team and engineers maintaining release cycles rather than exploring new insights and as the infrastructure complexity rises, organizational credibility (trust in your data) can be impacted.

Your early success in delivering accurate, fresh and consistent can be eroded in long-run by complexity. Ironically leading to loss of market to an upstart that hasn't yet accumulated the same baggage.
